How to clean your projection TV lens and mirrors

If you find the picture on your TV is looking washed out it may be time to clean your projection TV lens and mirrors. Don’t worry, it’s a fairly simple process that can be accomplished at home, with a little care. Like a computer, the insides of  projection TV can collect dust. Over time a thick layer of dust can collect on your lens and mirrors, damaging the quality of your picture.

Steps for cleaning your projection TV lens and mirrors

Use caution when cleaning your projection TV. We do not guarantee any specific results.

  1. Unplug your projection TV from all power supplies and peripheral devices. Be extremely careful when working with any TV. Even one that is unplugged. Your projection TV does contain capacitors and may still hold a charge that can shock you.
  2. Remove all of the screws from the back cover of your projection TV and place them carefully aside. You should be able to lift the back cover up and away from your TV. Please seek assistance in this step from a second individual to help steady the TV and/or lift the rear cover. On some projection TVs (such as Pioneer) you may need enter through the front of the set. Please check your set carefully to determine how to gain access to the mirrors and lenses.
  3. You should now be able to see the mirror and the three lens “guns” within your projection TV case.
  4. Use a soft cloth, such as a camera lens or eye glass cleaning cloth to remove any dust that has accumulated on the mirror or lenses. Be gentle in order to avoid scratching the surfaces.
  5. You can use a non-ammonia lens cleaner to help remove the dust, but be certain not to use any ammonia-based glass cleaners as they will cloud the surface of the lenses or mirrors, further degrading your picture quality.
  6. Now you can replace the cover on your projection TV set and all of the screws.
  7. Turn on your TV to check picture quality.
